The Shepherds Shelf Food Cupboard was established in April 2004 in response to a growing need for emergency assistance for families and individuals in the community surrounding Christ Lutheran Church in Kulpsville, PA. Initially, The Shepherds Shelf provided emergency food assistance on a twice weekly basis to recipients in Lower Salford and Towamencin Townships. However, it soon became very apparent that the need was much greater than anticipated. Our service area now encompasses the Sumneytown Pike corridor stretching from Lansdale to Green Lane.
The Shepherds Shelf provides nutritious food on a twice monthly basis, including meat, poultry, produce as well as household items including paper products, diapers, cleaning supplies and personal toiletries.
In 2006, The Shepherds Shelf became affiliated with the Community Action Development Commission of Montgomery County (CADCOM). Through CADCOM, The Shepherds Shelf is able to offer additional services including food stamp counseling, SHARE Food Cooperative, Montco Nutrition Outreach, Norristown Farmers Market, Housing Assistance, Weatherization Programs, and the Micro-Enterprise Resource Program.
A surprising number of recipients
of monthly food assistance are school aged children. The Shepherds Shelf
firmly believes that every child should have those extra things that often
are eliminated when a family is struggling with their budget. We offer birthday
bags for every child, as every child should have a birthday cake with candles!
We also provide Back to School supplies, Halloween candy, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
and Easter dinner baskets, Christmas Adopt-a-family programs with gifts and
stocking stuffers for each child,
and Easter baskets.
The Shepherds Shelf Swing has been organized to help raise funds to continue providing assistance to over 100 Montgomery County families. The Shepherds Shelf distributes, on average, $7,700. worth of food and household supplies on a monthly basis. We purchase food through wholesalers as well as rely on dedicated congregational and community donors.
The Shepherds Shelf operates out of the offices of Christ Lutheran Church, Kulpsville. We have outgrown the space we presently occupy. The Shepherds Shelf Swing is part of a strategic plan to raise $70,000 to move into a larger free standing storage facility. Our goal for the Inaurgural Outing is to raise $12,000. The Shepherds Shelf Swing will also assist us in raising awareness of the silent epidemic of poverty in Montgomery County and provide the financial resources to continue to address these issues.
We invite you to join us in this effort as a sponsor of our 2007 Inaugural Shepherds Shelf Swing golf outing.
